In 2017, the famed British motorsport group Prodrive announced the Renault Megane R.S. RX as their latest project in collaboration with professional skier and freerider Guerlain Chicherit's rallycross team GC Kompetition for the latter's participation in 2018 FIA World Rallycross Championship. It features a longitudinally mounted bespoke 2-litre turbocharged engine built by Prodrive, with Prodrive's in-house antilag system and regulated by Cosworth's engine management system.
The Megane also features some notable differences from other Rallycross Supercars, which can be seen from its double wishbone suspension system it uses instead of the common McPherson struts. It also has unique in-board brakes, with the brake caliper fixed to the gearbox on the front axle and to the differential on the rear axle. Another key difference is that it uses an Xtrac 5-speed sequential manual transmission instead of the commonly used 6-speed sequential manual gearbox. The car uses the common rear radiator cooling layout like its competition, except the rear vent is located at the bottom of the rear end instead of the boot lid. However, the team has to switch the rear vent to boot lid after FIA restricted its usage mid-season.
